Primary Research

An RFID reader creates an electro-magnetic field by puting an oscillating at a specific current through a coil. This creates a magnetic field around the coil. The card also has a coil that is able to interact with the field produced by the reader. It is possible to view the intensity of that field by placing a coil attached to an oscilloscope into the field. Being able to look at the intensity of the field over time allows me to figure out how the field is manipulated in order to transmit information....

Secondary Research

There are around 3 Major types of RFID card, the Proximity card, the Vicinity Card, and the Long Range Card. Within these classifications there are quite a few different “flavors” of RFID card, however I’ve only listed some of the most popular kinds. Different cards can have different amount of intelligence to them, the originals just had a serial number that they repeatedly sent once powered up, after that cards with re-programmable memory came out, and the latest ones can run computations and encrypt data completely on the card, all without a battery!...

Topic

RFID / Electromagnetic Coupling Electromagnetic coupling sounds like a very complex subject to research, but after looking into it, i’ve found it’s being used in many technologies in everyday life. Goal Understand how RFID and the principals behind it (electromagnetic coupling) work. Build a system that uses RFID as a core method of operation. Questions How is information transmitted? How is the information stored? How secure is the information on the card?...

Brainstorm

There are a number of different technologies that I have an intrest in, so I guess I’ll start out be listing the different things lying on my workbench and pick the one that I haven’t touched the longest… Software Defined Radio Transceiver Alarm Panel Home Automation Integration RFID Door Lock Kit ‘Smart Light’ Hack Lawn Sprinkler Automation Out of my current projects, really only the radio and the RFID Lock I can immediately relate to physics, and given that one of the examples from last semester was AM/FM Radio, that leaves me with RFID....
